CMBC EYES ON KENYA CHARITYVISION USA
CharityVision International is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization (NGO) creating sustainable solutions in eye care and empowering local health. The ministry is focused on restoring curable sight impairment worldwide—providing cataract surgeries and prescription glasses. They empower local physicians and create sustainable solutions.
Community Missionary Baptist Church of DeSoto and Cedar Hill, TX, under the leadership of it’s pastor, Oscar D. Epps, Sr., has a historic commitment of service to it’s community. The church has supported ministries both in Kenya and India for more than two years. The “CMBC Eyes On Kenya” project seeks to provide eye glasses to the village residents who cannot access necessary eye care.
01. The Need
The prevalence of blindness in both eyes is 8 times higher in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Kenya, than in all Western countries. Over 80% of people who need reading glasses do not have them, compared to less than 10% of people in Western countries.
02. The Impact
Visual impairment has significant negative impact on a person’s quality of fife and mental health, puts financial pressure on families and has broader economic impact. A child who is unable to read a chalkboard or a book will struggle to learn and complete their education. An adult who cannot work will not be able to support their family. An older person with reduced vision may not be able to maintain their independence.
03. The Issues
Shortage of health care professionals, the cost of care, and the lack of funds or greater basic living needs results in a low proportion of people receiving the care that they need. On top of this, people might attend an appointment at an Opticians and not be seen by a qualified practitioner or they may not receive a full health check of their eyes.
04. The Solution
It’s estimated that 75% of the population requires vision correction, with around 64 per cent of people choosing to wear glasses to correct their vision and 11 per cent opting for contact lenses — either solely or alongside eyeglasses. With so many of us wearing spectacles and having annual eye tests, glasses can, unfortunately, become ineffectual for the individual they were made for within just one year. Often made from metal or plastic, glasses can’t just be thrown in your household recycling bin, so many people are left wondering, ‘where can I recycle spectacles? Members and friends of CM BC can donate their used eyeglasses!
05. The Process
Bins will be placed in selected areas on both DeSoto and Cedar Hill campuses where eyeglasses can be donated. Here are details for your donation: •Do not donate broken eyeglasses. Clean eyeglasses and remove from their cases. Place eyeglasses in sandwich bags Shipments to Kenya will be made quarterly in 2023 – February, May, August, & November.
06. The Results
CharityVision has a working relationship with the hospitals in the area. School and community screening will by done quarterly for children and adults in the communities where our churches exist.
